Ukraine needs 𝗪𝗘𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗡𝗦, 𝗔𝗠𝗠𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡, 𝗗𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗦, 𝗔𝗜𝗥 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘, 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗬, 𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗖 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗘, 𝗩𝗘𝗛𝗜𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗦, 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗦, and the ability to replace what is destroyed faster than Russia can produce its own weapons.

The West has the money. We have the technology. We have the factories. We have the engineers.

𝗦𝗢 𝗪𝗛𝗬, 𝗔𝗙𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡 𝗙𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗪𝗔𝗥, 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗚𝗚𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛?

I have spent more than four years working with Ukrainian soldiers, commanders, and military units. I have watched this war change in ways I never could have imagined when I first arrived in Ukraine in 2022.

The longer I am here, the more convinced I become that 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅.

This is not an argument against defense companies. It is not an argument against military spending. And it certainly is not an argument against supporting Ukraine.

𝗜𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗨𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗪𝗘 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗢 𝗦𝗟𝗢𝗪𝗟𝗬, 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗢 𝗠𝗨𝗖𝗛, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗔𝗗𝗔𝗣𝗧 𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗦.

And when that happens, it is not a corporation that pays the price.

𝗘𝗜𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗛𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗨𝗦

In 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave his farewell address to the American people. Think about who Eisenhower was. He was not some anti war activist standing outside the Pentagon. 𝗛𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘇𝗶 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆.

Then he became President of the United States.

And when he left office, one of his final messages to the American people was a warning about the growing influence of what he called the 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅.

Eisenhower understood that America needed a strong military. He understood that America needed factories, engineers, scientists, weapons, and a massive industrial base capable of defending the nation.

But he also understood the danger.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗧𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙?

What happens when 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 begin influencing decisions about national defense?

𝗦𝗜𝗫𝗧𝗬 𝗙𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥, 𝗜 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗞 𝗨𝗞𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗨𝗦 𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡.

𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗔 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗢𝗙 𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗬

During World War II, America became known as the 𝗔𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆.

The mission was simple: 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗿.

American factories produced aircraft, tanks, ships, trucks, ammunition, weapons, and equipment on an enormous scale. Was everything perfect? Of course not. Were mistakes made? Absolutely.

But there was a sense of urgency.

America understood that industrial production was not separate from winning the war.

𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗥.

Today, Western countries spend enormous amounts of money on defense, yet 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁.

Why?

Massive contracts, years of development, proprietary technology, licensing agreements, endless testing, endless bureaucracy, and procurement systems that can take years, sometimes decades, to deliver equipment to soldiers.

There is just one problem.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗠𝗬 𝗔𝗗𝗔𝗣𝗧𝗦.

𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗙 𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔𝗗𝗔𝗣𝗧 𝗙𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥, 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗗𝗜𝗘.

𝗨𝗞𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗨𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘

I see this firsthand in Ukraine.

𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗛𝗦. 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞𝗦.

A new drone is developed, then a countermeasure appears. Frequencies change. Electronic warfare changes. Tactics change. Technology changes. Russia adapts. Ukraine responds. Russia adapts again.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗬𝗖𝗟𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣𝗦.

Something that works extremely well today may become less effective several months from now. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁.

That should concern every Western military leader, defense company, and government official.

Because while the battlefield is adapting in weeks and months, 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀.

Think about that.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗔 𝗪𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗪𝗘𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗦𝗬𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛 𝗗𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗣𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧, 𝗧𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚.

That is not simply inefficient.

𝗜𝗡 𝗔 𝗠𝗔𝗝𝗢𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗥, 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗕𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗖.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗥𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔𝗟𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚

Here is where I think we need to have an uncomfortable conversation.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗘𝗥 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗦 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘, 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘, 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘, 𝗔𝗙𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗩𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗪.

The corporation needs something profitable.

𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔𝗟𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚.

A soldier does not care about stock prices. He does not care about quarterly earnings. He does not care how many years were spent negotiating a contract.

𝗛𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀. 𝗛𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁. 𝗛𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱. 𝗛𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱.

And ultimately, 𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲.

That is the reality I see here.

Ukraine has become one of the greatest laboratories of military innovation in modern history because Ukrainians have been forced to adapt. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

They have a problem. They develop something. They test it. They use it. They learn from it. They improve it.

Then they do it again.

𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗙𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗢𝗡.

I want to be very clear about something.

We need them. We need factories, engineers, researchers, scientists, innovation, massive production capacity, and companies capable of building advanced aircraft, missiles, air defense systems, vehicles, ammunition, and technology.

𝗔 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗚 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗜𝗦 𝗔𝗕𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗨𝗧𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗡𝗘𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬.

But here is the difference.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬.

That is the conversation we need to have.

We need a system that rewards companies for producing what soldiers actually need. 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Identify what does not work. Fix it. Improve it. Produce it. Get it back to the battlefield.

Then do it again.

After more than four years working with soldiers here in Ukraine, I have become convinced of one thing.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 𝗜𝗦 𝗕𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗧.

It does not care how much money you spent. It does not care how famous the company is. It does not care how impressive the presentation looked. It does not care how many government officials attended the conference.

𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗜𝗧 𝗖𝗘𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗖𝗞 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗘.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦.

Can you produce enough of it? Can soldiers use it? Can they repair it? Can you replace it? Can you improve it?

And most importantly:

Because if you cannot, eventually the enemy will find your weakness.

I have been here for more than four years. I have worked with Ukrainian soldiers and commanders. I have watched this war evolve. I have watched technology change. I have watched tactics change.

This is not about being anti business. It is not about being anti military. It is not about spending less money on defense.

Not stock prices. Not corporate profits. Not billion dollar contracts.

Introduction: Understanding Combined Arms Warfare

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about war is that battles are won by a single weapon system. Some people think tanks win wars. Others believe artillery wins wars. Today, many people look at videos from Ukraine and assume drones have changed everything. The truth is much simpler: no single weapon wins modern wars by itself.

This article is written for people who know little or nothing about military operations. If you’ve never served in the military, studied warfare, or spent time around soldiers, that’s perfectly fine. The purpose of this guide is to explain modern warfare in plain English and help you understand how armies actually fight on today’s battlefield.

Modern warfare is built around a concept called Combined Arms Warfare. While the term may sound complicated, the idea is simple. Different parts of the military work together as a team, with each element supporting the others. Tanks provide firepower and protection. Infantry secures terrain and clears positions. Artillery strikes targets from long range. Reconnaissance finds the enemy. Logistics keeps everyone supplied and moving. When these elements work together, they become far more effective than any one of them operating alone.

Think about a football team. The quarterback cannot win a game by himself. He needs the offensive line to protect him, receivers to catch the ball, coaches to develop the plan, and a defense to stop the opposing team. Every player has a role. Every player contributes to success. Modern armies function much the same way.

Many people watch battlefield footage and only see the final result. They see tanks firing, artillery exploding, drones striking targets, or infantry attacking. What they often do not see is the enormous amount of planning, coordination, intelligence gathering, logistics, and teamwork required to make those actions successful. Behind every successful attack is a system of people, equipment, and organizations working together toward a common goal.

The purpose of this article is to give you a basic understanding of how a modern combat brigade fights. We will discuss reconnaissance, artillery, armor, infantry, command and maneuver, and logistics. More importantly, we will explain how each of these elements works together to create combat power on the battlefield.

Before we begin, there is one lesson that you should remember throughout this entire guide:

Battles are not won by individual weapons. Battles are won by teams.

The military calls that team Combined Arms Warfare.

Part 1: Reconnaissance - The Eyes and Ears of the Battlefield

Before an army can attack, defend, move, or fire a single shot, it must answer one simple question:

Where is the enemy?

That may sound obvious, but throughout history entire battles have been lost because commanders did not know where the enemy was, how many soldiers they had, or what they were planning to do next.

This is where reconnaissance, often called recon, comes into play. Reconnaissance is the process of finding, identifying, tracking, and understanding the enemy before they can do the same to you. In simple terms, reconnaissance serves as the eyes and ears of the battlefield. Its purpose is not necessarily to fight the enemy. Its purpose is to gather information so commanders can make better decisions.

In a modern army, reconnaissance can be conducted by scouts, drones, surveillance teams, intelligence personnel, radar systems, satellites, and soldiers observing from the ground. All of these systems work together to build a picture of what is happening across the battlefield. The better that picture is, the better the commander can plan and fight.

The job of reconnaissance is to answer a few critical questions. Where is the enemy? How many are there? What weapons do they have? Where are they moving? What are they planning to do? Every commander wants answers to these questions before committing soldiers to battle.

Think about it like a football game. If one team knows every play the other team is about to run, they have a huge advantage. The battlefield works much the same way. The side that has better information usually has a much better chance of winning. This is why military professionals often say:

“First to see. First to understand. First to act.”

Once reconnaissance finds the enemy, that information is passed to commanders. The commander can then decide whether to call for artillery, move tanks, position infantry, launch an attack, or strengthen defenses. Without reconnaissance, every decision becomes guesswork. With reconnaissance, decisions are based on facts.

One of the most important lessons in warfare is that information is combat power. Knowing where the enemy is located can be just as valuable as having more soldiers or more weapons. Many battles have been won simply because one side understood the battlefield better than the other.

Before artillery can fire accurately, reconnaissance must locate the target. Before tanks can maneuver effectively, reconnaissance must identify threats. Before infantry can attack, reconnaissance must identify enemy positions. In modern warfare, almost everything begins with reconnaissance.

The key lesson is simple: before you can fight the enemy, you must first find the enemy. Everything starts with reconnaissance.

Artillery - The King of Battle

Now that reconnaissance has located the enemy, the next question becomes simple: What do we do with that information? In most modern armies, the answer is artillery.

Artillery has been called the “King of Battle” for more than a century, and for good reason. Throughout modern warfare, artillery has been responsible for a large percentage of battlefield casualties. Long before tanks arrive and infantry attacks begin, artillery is often the first weapon used to shape the battlefield.

Artillery is designed to strike targets from long distances. Unlike infantry, which must move close to the enemy, artillery can engage targets many kilometers away. Modern artillery systems can hit enemy positions, command posts, logistics hubs, defensive trenches, vehicle concentrations, and troop formations without ever seeing the target directly.

The primary purpose of artillery is not always to destroy everything. Sometimes its mission is to suppress the enemy. Suppression means forcing enemy soldiers to take cover, stop moving, stop shooting, and focus on survival rather than fighting. A soldier hiding in a trench is much less dangerous than a soldier actively engaging friendly forces.

This is where reconnaissance and artillery work together. Reconnaissance units locate the enemy and pass that information to commanders. The commanders then direct artillery onto those targets. Without reconnaissance, artillery is simply firing blindly. Without artillery, reconnaissance has limited ability to affect the battlefield. Together, they become a powerful combination.

Military professionals often summarize this relationship with a simple phrase: “Scouts find them. Artillery kills them.” While simplified, it highlights how important these two battlefield functions are to one another.

Artillery can also shape the battlefield before an attack begins. Imagine an enemy defending a village or a trench system. Before friendly forces move forward, artillery can strike defensive positions, destroy obstacles, damage equipment, and disrupt enemy communications. By the time tanks and infantry begin their advance, the enemy may already be weakened, confused, and disorganized.

In modern warfare, artillery comes in many forms. Traditional howitzers fire large shells over long distances. Rocket artillery systems can strike large areas quickly. Precision-guided munitions can hit individual targets with remarkable accuracy. While the technology continues to evolve, the purpose remains the same: to place overwhelming firepower on the enemy at the right place and the right time.

One of the biggest misconceptions civilians have is that artillery simply destroys things. In reality, artillery helps commanders control the battlefield. It can block enemy movement, support friendly attacks, protect defensive positions, and influence where and when the enemy chooses to fight.

Think of artillery like a heavyweight boxer delivering punches before the rest of the team moves in. The goal is to weaken the opponent, disrupt their plan, and create opportunities for friendly forces to gain an advantage.

Before tanks move.

Before infantry attacks.

Before objectives are seized.

Artillery is often shaping the battlefield.

The key lesson is simple: reconnaissance finds the enemy, and artillery gives commanders the ability to reach out and strike them from a distance.

Armor - The Battlefield’s Hammer

When most people think about modern warfare, they picture tanks. They see massive armored vehicles rolling across open fields, firing powerful guns, and leading attacks. For more than a hundred years, tanks have been one of the most recognizable symbols of military power. However, one of the biggest misconceptions people have is that tanks win wars by themselves. They do not.

The primary purpose of armor is to provide firepower, protection, and mobility. A tank combines all three. It can move quickly across the battlefield, survive enemy fire that would destroy lighter vehicles, and deliver devastating firepower against enemy troops, bunkers, buildings, and other armored vehicles.

Think of a tank as a heavyweight boxer. It is designed to deliver powerful punches while absorbing punishment that would stop other battlefield systems. When used correctly, tanks can break through defensive positions, support infantry attacks, and create opportunities for commanders to exploit weaknesses in the enemy’s defenses.

One of the biggest advantages of tanks is protection. Infantry soldiers are vulnerable to machine guns, artillery fragments, and small arms fire. A tank’s armor protects its crew from many of these threats and allows it to operate in areas where infantry alone might struggle to survive.

Another advantage is firepower. Modern tanks carry large cannons capable of destroying enemy vehicles, bunkers, defensive positions, and fortified structures. In many situations, a tank can eliminate threats that would require much more effort from infantry forces operating on foot.

The third advantage is mobility. Tanks can move across difficult terrain while carrying their armor and weapons with them. This allows commanders to rapidly shift combat power from one area of the battlefield to another. A tank force that moves quickly can create opportunities, exploit weaknesses, and place pressure on enemy forces before they have time to react.

However, tanks are not invincible. Modern battlefields contain many threats that can destroy armored vehicles. Antitank missiles, mines, artillery, drones, attack helicopters, and other tanks all pose serious dangers. A tank that operates alone often becomes an easy target for a well prepared enemy.

This is why military professionals emphasize combined arms warfare. Tanks perform best when working alongside infantry, artillery, reconnaissance units, engineers, and air defense systems. Reconnaissance identifies threats before the tanks encounter them. Artillery suppresses enemy positions. Infantry protects tanks from enemy antitank teams hiding in buildings, trenches, and forests. Engineers clear obstacles and minefields. Every element supports the others.

A good way to think about armor is this: tanks create opportunities, but they rarely finish the fight alone. Their job is to break through, apply pressure, destroy key targets, and create conditions that allow the rest of the force to succeed.

History has repeatedly shown that armies that use tanks properly can achieve remarkable results. History has also shown that tanks used without support often suffer devastating losses. The difference is usually not the tank itself. The difference is how well the tank is integrated with the rest of the team.

When reconnaissance has located the enemy and artillery has shaped the battlefield, armor becomes one of the most powerful tools a commander can employ. Tanks bring firepower, protection, and mobility to the fight, allowing friendly forces to gain momentum and seize the initiative.

The key lesson is simple: tanks are incredibly powerful, but tanks are most effective when they fight as part of a team. Armor is the hammer, but combined arms warfare is what allows that hammer to strike effectively.

Infantry - The Queen of Battle

After reconnaissance has located the enemy, artillery has shaped the battlefield, and armor has created opportunities, someone still has to accomplish the hardest task in warfare: taking and holding ground. That responsibility belongs to the infantry.

Infantry are the soldiers who fight on foot or from armored vehicles. They operate in cities, forests, trenches, mountains, and terrain where larger systems often struggle to function. While tanks, artillery, and aircraft are powerful tools, none of them can physically occupy and control terrain. Only infantry can do that.

Military professionals often refer to infantry as the “Queen of Battle.” While artillery may be called the King of Battle, infantry remains the foundation upon which every army is built. Throughout history, wars have ultimately been decided by soldiers willing to move forward, close with the enemy, and secure objectives on the ground.

One of the biggest misconceptions civilians have is that tanks or aircraft win wars by themselves. The question now becomes: How do commanders bring all of these pieces together to achieve victory?

The answer is maneuver warfare.

Maneuver warfare is the art of placing your forces in positions of advantage while placing the enemy in positions of disadvantage. Contrary to what many people believe, warfare is not simply about destroying the enemy with firepower. It is about creating situations where the enemy can no longer effectively fight, communicate, move, or accomplish their mission.

Think of a game of chess. The goal is not to capture every piece on the board. The goal is to place your opponent in a position where they can no longer effectively respond. Good commanders think the same way. They are constantly looking for weaknesses, opportunities, and ways to gain an advantage over the enemy.

This is where command becomes critical. Commanders receive information from reconnaissance units, analyze the battlefield, identify opportunities, and make decisions. They decide where artillery should fire, where tanks should move, where infantry should attack, and where resources should be concentrated. Every major action on the battlefield begins with a decision made by a commander.

One of the most important concepts in warfare is called the initiative. The side that controls the initiative forces the enemy to react. Instead of following their own plan, the enemy spends their time responding to your actions. This places them at a disadvantage because they are constantly trying to catch up rather than executing their own strategy.

Imagine a boxing match. One fighter is constantly moving, throwing punches, and controlling the pace of the fight. The other fighter is forced to react to everything that happens. Which fighter is more likely to win? The battlefield works much the same way. The side that controls the initiative often controls the battle.

Logistics - The Most Boring Thing That Wins Wars

When most people think about war, they imagine tanks charging across fields, artillery firing in the distance, infantry attacking enemy positions, or drones hunting targets from above. What they usually do not think about is fuel trucks, maintenance crews, supply warehouses, mechanics, cooks, medics, and transportation units.

That is a mistake.

Many military professionals will tell you that wars are not won by tanks, artillery, or infantry. Wars are won by logistics.

Logistics is the system that keeps an army alive and functioning. It includes fuel, ammunition, food, water, medical supplies, spare parts, maintenance, transportation, communications equipment, and everything else needed to keep soldiers fighting. Without logistics, even the most powerful army in the world will eventually stop moving.

Think about a modern tank. It may have powerful armor and an impressive cannon, but without fuel it cannot move. Without ammunition it cannot fight. Without maintenance it eventually breaks down. The same is true for every other weapon system on the battlefield. No matter how advanced the equipment is, it depends on logistics to keep operating.

The same principle applies to soldiers. Infantry cannot fight indefinitely without food, water, ammunition, medical support, and replacement equipment. Every soldier on the front line depends on hundreds of people working behind the scenes to keep supplies flowing forward.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that military operations begin when troops cross the line of departure and attack. Most people still believe wars are decided by technology. They look at aircraft, missiles, long range fires, and assume that is what determines victory.

That is not reality.

Wars are still decided by infantry. They always have been. Everything else on the battlefield exists to support them, enable them, or protect them. Airpower can destroy targets, artillery can shape the fight, drones can observe and strike, but none of those systems can walk onto a position, clear it, and hold it. At some point, a man with a rifle has to move forward, take ground, and stay there.

That has not changed.

What has changed is how that infantry operates, how it is organized, and how it survives in a battlefield that is more lethal, more observed, and more unforgiving than anything we have seen in modern Western war.

Ukraine is proving that every single day.

The Role of the Infantry in Modern War

The infantry is the decisive arm of combat because it is the only force that can physically control terrain and impose will on the ground. In Ukraine, this has become even more apparent. The battlefield is layered with surveillance, drones, artillery, and electronic warfare. Every movement is watched, every position is vulnerable, and every mistake is punished quickly.

And yet, despite all of that, the fight still comes down to infantry.

What has changed is the cost of movement and the level of discipline required to survive. Infantry units are no longer operating in environments where they can mass freely, maneuver openly, or rely on periods of reduced observation. Instead, they are fighting in a constant state of exposure where survival depends on how well they adapt.

This has forced a fundamental shift in how infantry is employed, starting at the lowest level.

What we are seeing now is a battlefield where time, space, and signature are everything. Movement is no longer about speed alone, it is about timing, concealment, and coordination with fires and drones. Units cannot simply advance; they must shape the environment before they move. That means using drones for reconnaissance, confirming enemy positions, coordinating indirect fires, and then moving in small elements once conditions are set.

Infantry is now operating as part of a constantly connected system. The integration of drones at every level has changed how decisions are made. A squad or platoon leader can now see the battlefield in ways that were previously limited to higher headquarters, but that visibility comes with increased pressure. Decisions must be made faster, and mistakes are immediately exploited.

The defensive side has also evolved. Positions are no longer static strongpoints designed to hold indefinitely. Instead, they are often temporary, concealed, and designed to minimize detection. Units rotate, reposition, and adapt constantly to avoid being targeted. Survivability depends on not being found, not just on being fortified.

Logistics and sustainment have become more complex at the infantry level as well. Resupply is no longer routine. Moving ammunition, water, and medical support forward requires the same level of planning and concealment as maneuver. Casualty evacuation is not guaranteed, and infantry units must be prepared to sustain themselves for extended periods under pressure.

Communication has also changed. Electronic warfare can disrupt traditional systems, forcing units to rely on redundancy, discipline, and sometimes even low tech solutions. Leaders must plan for degraded communication environments and ensure that subordinates understand intent well enough to operate without constant direction.

All of this reinforces a simple truth. The infantry is still the decisive force, but it is now operating in an environment that demands far greater adaptability, discipline, and awareness than before. The fundamentals have not changed, shoot, move, communicate, but the conditions in which those fundamentals are executed have.

The Individual Soldier

Everything begins with the individual soldier. If the individual is not trained, disciplined, and capable, nothing above him works.

In Ukraine, the individual infantryman is expected to do far more than in traditional doctrine. He is not just a rifleman. He is a sensor, a decision maker, and part of a networked system. He must understand not only how to shoot and move, but how to survive in an environment where drones are constantly overhead and artillery can respond within minutes or seconds.

That means understanding camouflage at a level most Western soldiers have never had to apply. It means knowing how to move without being detected, how to minimize signature, and how to operate with limited communication. It means being able to render medical aid immediately, because evacuation is not always possible. It means understanding how to operate around drones, both friendly and enemy, and how to react when they are overhead.

It also means understanding terrain in a much deeper way. The individual soldier must be able to read ground quickly and instinctively, identifying cover, concealment, movement routes, and danger areas without being told. There is no time for long deliberation. You either understand the ground or you become exposed on it.

The individual must also manage his own survivability at all times. That includes noise discipline, light discipline, thermal discipline, and movement discipline. Small mistakes like silhouetting yourself, bunching up with others, or staying in one position too long can lead to immediate targeting. The margin for error is extremely small.

Weapons handling and marksmanship are still fundamental, but even that has evolved. Engagements are often short, fast, and close, or coordinated through drones and indirect fire. The individual soldier must be ready to react instantly, engage effectively, and then move before being targeted in return.

There is also a mental component that cannot be ignored. The constant presence of drones, the knowledge that you are being watched, and the speed at which artillery can arrive create a level of stress that is continuous. Soldiers must be able to operate under that pressure, maintain discipline, and continue to make sound decisions.

Most importantly, it means being able to operate independently.

In many cases, soldiers are separated from higher command, operating in small elements with limited guidance. Decisions are made at the lowest level, and hesitation can get people killed. That level of responsibility at the individual level is something that has been accelerated by this war.

The modern infantryman is no longer just executing orders. He is interpreting intent, adapting to conditions, and acting in real time. That shift places a greater burden on training, leadership, and personal responsibility than ever before.

Fire Team: The True Foundation

The fire team is where combat power truly begins. While doctrine often highlights squads as the primary unit, in Ukraine, the fire team has become the most relevant and survivable element.

A fire team is small, typically three to four soldiers, and that size matters. It is small enough to move without immediately drawing attention, small enough to disperse quickly, and flexible enough to adapt in real time. In an environment where drones are constantly searching for targets, anything larger becomes easier to detect and engage.

Fire teams in Ukraine often operate with a degree of independence that would be unusual in traditional Western doctrine. They move separately, establish positions separately, and only consolidate when necessary. They provide their own security, execute their own movement, and maintain awareness of both friendly and enemy forces.

This level of decentralization is not a preference. It is a requirement.

The fire team is now not just a building block, it is often the primary maneuver element in contested areas.

What makes the fire team effective in this environment is its ability to combine movement, security, and fires in a very tight and responsive loop. Each member has a defined role, but those roles are often fluid depending on the situation. One soldier may be observing, another providing security, another ready to engage, and another managing communication or coordinating with higher. Everyone must understand the task, not just their position within it.

The fire team must also be capable of operating with minimal support. In many cases, they are the first element to make contact, the first to identify enemy positions, and the first to react. That means they must be able to call for fires, adjust those fires if needed, and reposition quickly before being targeted themselves.

Coordination within the team is critical. Communication is often limited, so much of it relies on pre established understanding, simple signals, and shared experience. The team must move as a unit without needing constant verbal direction. This level of cohesion takes training and repetition.

The fire team also plays a key role in shaping the fight for larger elements. They identify routes, probe enemy positions, establish initial footholds, and create conditions for follow on forces. In many situations, multiple fire teams are operating across an area, loosely connected but synchronized in purpose, creating effects that would traditionally require larger formations.

Survivability is directly tied to how well the fire team manages time and exposure. They do not stay in one place longer than necessary. They avoid patterns. They minimize signature. Movement is deliberate and purposeful, and once a task is complete, they reposition.

This is a constant cycle of move, observe, engage, and displace.

In Ukraine, the fire team is not just supporting the fight. In many cases, it is the fight.

Squad: Distributed, Not Concentrated

The squad still exists as an organizational structure, typically composed of two or three fire teams, but its employment has changed significantly.

In Western doctrine, squads are expected to operate together, maneuver as a unit, and execute coordinated battle drills in close proximity. That model assumes a level of survivability that does not exist in Ukraine. When you concentrate forces in this environment, you increase your signature, and once you are detected, you are quickly targeted by drones or indirect fire. The battlefield does not allow for that kind of exposure anymore.

Instead, squads are now dispersed.

The squad leader is no longer controlling a tightly grouped element. He is managing multiple fire teams that may be separated by distance, terrain, and visibility. Communication becomes more difficult. Control becomes more decentralized. The squad functions more as a network than a formation.

This changes everything about leadership at that level. Squad leaders must trust their teams to operate independently, make decisions, and execute without constant direction. The ability to maintain cohesion without physical proximity is one of the defining challenges of modern infantry operations.

The squad is now less about physical mass and more about synchronized effects. Fire teams operate in different positions, often covering each other, observing different sectors, and creating overlapping fields of awareness. Instead of moving as one, they move in sequence, maintaining spacing and minimizing exposure while still working toward a common objective.

This requires a much stronger emphasis on intent. The squad leader cannot control every movement, so he must clearly communicate the mission, the purpose, and the end state. Each fire team must understand not just what to do, but why they are doing it. That understanding allows them to adapt when communication is degraded or when the situation changes.

Technology plays a role, but it is not always reliable. Electronic warfare can disrupt communications, so squads must be prepared to operate with limited or no contact. Pre planned signals, timing, and rehearsals become critical. The ability to operate under degraded conditions is no longer an exception, it is the standard.

The squad also serves as the link between higher command and the lowest level of execution. Information flows up and down through the squad. Enemy positions, drone sightings, and changes in the situation are reported upward, while tasks, adjustments, and intent are pushed downward. That flow must be maintained even when the squad is physically dispersed.

Survivability remains the priority. Squads do not hold positions in the same way they once did. They shift, reposition, and adapt constantly. They avoid creating patterns. They minimize time in exposed areas. The focus is on staying effective while staying alive.

In this environment, the squad is no longer a tightly controlled formation. It is a distributed system of small elements working together, connected by intent, discipline, and experience.

Platoon: The Limit of Maneuver

The platoon remains the highest level of maneuver that can consistently operate in a single area without becoming overly vulnerable.

A platoon brings together multiple squads, allowing for coordination, support, and the integration of fires. But even at this level, dispersion is critical. Platoons do not move as a single mass. They operate in elements, staggered, separated, and coordinated through communication and timing.

Anything larger becomes a target.

In Ukraine, drone saturation and ISR capabilities make it extremely difficult to move company sized elements without being detected. Once detected, artillery and drone strikes follow quickly. The platoon represents the balance between combat power and survivability.

Platoon leaders are now responsible for coordinating dispersed elements, integrating drone support, managing fires, and maintaining awareness across a fragmented battlefield. It is a level of complexity that exceeds traditional expectations.

At this level, the platoon is no longer just a maneuver element. It becomes a coordination node for multiple systems working together. Drone feeds, indirect fires, and ground movement are all tied together at the platoon level. The platoon leader must understand not only his squads, but how to synchronize those assets in real time.

This means that planning and execution are compressed. There is less time to prepare and more pressure to act quickly. A platoon leader must be able to identify an opportunity, coordinate fires or drone support, maneuver elements into position, and execute before the enemy can react. That cycle happens fast, and hesitation can cost the entire element.

Control is also different. Instead of directing squads step by step, the platoon leader provides intent, assigns sectors or objectives, and allows subordinate leaders to execute within that framework. Communication supports the operation, but it cannot be relied on completely. Leaders must assume that at some point, they will lose contact and their squads will continue the mission based on intent alone.

Terrain plays a critical role at this level. Platoons must use terrain to mask movement, break line of sight, and reduce exposure to drones and observation. Movement is often tied to terrain features, vegetation, urban structures, and changes in elevation. Open ground is avoided whenever possible, and when it must be crossed, it is done quickly, deliberately, and usually under some form of cover or deception.

Sustainment at the platoon level is also more demanding. Ammunition, water, and medical support must be managed carefully. Resupply is not guaranteed and often requires coordination with higher or specialized elements. Casualty evacuation is more complex due to the threat environment, and platoons must be prepared to stabilize and hold casualties longer than expected.

The platoon also plays a key role in shaping the fight beyond its immediate area. Through reconnaissance, contact reports, and engagement, platoons provide critical information to higher headquarters. That information feeds into larger decisions, including where to apply fires, where to reinforce, and where to exploit.

In this environment, the platoon is the highest level where maneuver, fires, and intelligence are consistently integrated in direct contact with the enemy. It is the point where small-unit action meets larger operational effects.

That is why it has become the limit of maneuver.

Company: Coordination Over Concentration

The company still exists as a command structure, but its role has shifted away from direct maneuver.

Traditionally, companies would mass combat power, conduct coordinated assaults, and maneuver as a unified force. In Ukraine, that is rarely possible. Instead, companies are spread across sectors, with platoons operating independently or semi independently.

The company commander is no longer leading a single fight. He is managing multiple fights simultaneously.

This requires a different approach to command and control. Communication systems, drone feeds, intelligence updates, and fire coordination all flow through the company level. The focus is not on massing forces, but on synchronizing effects across dispersed units.

The company becomes a node in a larger system, rather than a maneuver element.

At this level, the company serves as the critical link between tactical execution and higher level coordination. The commander must maintain awareness across a wide battlespace, often managing platoons that are physically separated by kilometers, each engaged in its own fight. This requires a constant flow of information, rapid decision making, and the ability to prioritize limited resources.

Fires are one of the most important tools at the company level. The company commander must coordinate indirect fires, drone strikes, and supporting assets to shape the battlefield for his platoons. This is not done in large, pre planned phases, but continuously, adjusting to real time information coming from the ground and from aerial systems.

Drone integration becomes even more critical at this level. The company often has access to multiple drone feeds, both reconnaissance and strike. These feeds provide situational awareness, confirm enemy positions, and enable precise targeting. Managing that information and turning it into action is a constant process.

Command posts at the company level have also evolved. They are smaller, more mobile, and more concealed than traditional setups. Static command posts become targets quickly, so companies must be prepared to displace, operate with minimal signature, and maintain continuity even when forced to move.

Leadership at the company level is less about direct control and more about enabling subordinate leaders. The commander provides intent, allocates resources, and ensures that platoons have what they need to operate effectively. Trust in subordinate leaders is essential, as direct oversight is limited.

Logistics and sustainment are also managed at this level, but under much more challenging conditions. Resupply must be coordinated carefully to avoid detection. Routes must be planned, timing must be precise, and movements must be concealed. The company is responsible for ensuring that its platoons remain combat effective despite these constraints.

The company also plays a key role in maintaining cohesion across dispersed elements. Even though platoons are separated, they must still operate as part of a unified effort. The company provides that connection, ensuring that actions in one area support actions in another.

In this environment, the company is not defined by its ability to mass forces, but by its ability to coordinate, synchronize, and sustain combat power across a fragmented and highly contested battlefield.

Battalion: The System That Enables War

The battalion is where the fight is truly sustained.

At this level, all warfighting functions come together. Intelligence, fires, logistics, communications, and maneuver are integrated to support the fight. The battalion does not fight as a single unit. It enables multiple units to fight across a wide area.

In Ukraine, battalions are responsible for managing dispersion across tens of kilometers of front line. They coordinate artillery strikes, manage drone operations, ensure resupply, and maintain communication across fragmented units.

The battalion command post becomes critical.

This is where decisions are made, information is processed, and the fight is synchronized. Without effective battalion level coordination, dispersed units lose cohesion and effectiveness.

At this level, the battalion is no longer just a headquarters, it is a system that connects everything happening on the battlefield. Information from platoons and companies flows upward, is analyzed, and then turned into decisions that affect the entire area of operations. That includes where to apply fires, where to reinforce, where to shift resources, and where to exploit opportunities.

The battalion integrates multiple layers of capability. Artillery units, drone teams, reconnaissance elements, and logistics assets all operate under or in coordination with the battalion. This allows for a level of synchronization that smaller units cannot achieve on their own. A platoon may identify a target, but it is the battalion that can bring the full weight of fires onto that target.

Drone operations at the battalion level are particularly important. This is where broader situational awareness is developed. Multiple drone feeds, reconnaissance reports, and intelligence sources are combined to create a clearer picture of the battlefield. That picture allows commanders to make informed decisions and anticipate enemy actions.

Command posts must be survivable. In Ukraine, static command posts are quickly targeted, so battalion headquarters must remain mobile, concealed, and capable of operating under degraded conditions. Redundancy is critical. Communications systems must be layered, and plans must account for disruption.

The battalion also manages sustainment at scale. Ammunition, fuel, medical support, and personnel replacements must be coordinated across dispersed units. This is not a simple task in an environment where movement is dangerous and supply routes are vulnerable. Effective sustainment is what allows units to remain in the fight over time.

Another key function is maintaining tempo. The battalion ensures that operations continue without losing momentum. It coordinates rotations, manages reserves, and keeps pressure on the enemy while maintaining the effectiveness of its own forces.

Leadership at this level requires the ability to process large amounts of information, make decisions quickly, and communicate intent clearly across multiple units. The battalion commander is not focused on a single engagement, but on the broader fight, ensuring that all elements are working toward a common objective.

In modern warfare, especially in Ukraine, the battalion is the level where tactical actions are connected to operational effects. It is the system that holds everything together, allowing dispersed units to fight as part of a coordinated effort rather than isolated elements.

Without that system, the fight breaks down.

Western Doctrine vs Ukrainian Adaptation

Western doctrine is built on principles that still matter. Combined arms maneuver, synchronization, and mass are not obsolete. But they have been challenged by the reality of this battlefield.

Ukraine has adapted those principles to survive.

The difference is not in understanding warfare. It is in applying it under conditions where visibility is constant and survivability is limited. Western forces have not had to operate under this level of persistent observation and threat.

Ukraine has.

This has forced a shift toward:

• Dispersion over mass

• Decentralization over control

• Adaptation over rigid doctrine

Ukraine is not abandoning doctrine. It is evolving it.

What we are seeing is not a rejection of combined arms, but a redistribution of how those effects are applied. Instead of massing forces physically, Ukraine is massing effects. Fires, drones, and maneuver are still synchronized, but they are spread across time and space rather than concentrated in one location. This reduces vulnerability while still achieving the desired outcome.

The role of the commander has also changed. In Western doctrine, control is often maintained through detailed planning and coordination. In Ukraine, control is maintained through intent and trust. Leaders at every level must understand the mission deeply enough to act independently when communication is degraded or when conditions change. This creates a more flexible force, but it requires a higher level of competence across the board.

Technology has accelerated this shift. Drones provide real time visibility, but they also expose movement. Electronic warfare disrupts communication, forcing units to operate with limited connectivity. This creates an environment where adaptability is more important than strict adherence to a plan. Units that cannot adjust quickly become ineffective.

There is also a difference in tempo. Western doctrine often assumes phases of operation, shaping, maneuver, consolidation. In Ukraine, those phases are compressed or happening simultaneously. Units are constantly adjusting, reacting, and repositioning. There is no clear pause between actions.

Another key factor is survivability. Western doctrine traditionally relies on protection through armor, fires, and maneuver. In Ukraine, protection often comes from not being detected in the first place. Concealment, deception, and movement are as important as firepower. This has shifted how units think about defense and offense.

Ukraine has also demonstrated the importance of integrating lessons quickly. Feedback from the battlefield is rapidly incorporated into tactics and procedures. Units adapt in real time, and those adaptations spread across the force. This creates a cycle of continuous improvement that is difficult to replicate in more structured systems.

At the same time, there are still areas where Western doctrine provides value. Large scale coordination, advanced systems integration, and certain technical capabilities remain strengths. The difference is that those strengths must now be applied in a way that accounts for the realities of a highly contested, highly observed battlefield.

What Ukraine has shown is that doctrine must be flexible. It must be able to evolve under pressure and adapt to conditions that were not anticipated. The principles remain valid, but their application must change.

This is not a temporary adjustment. This is the direction modern warfare is moving.

The Reality of the Modern Battlefield

The defining feature of this war is visibility.

You are being watched almost all the time.

Drones, satellites, ISR systems, and electronic warfare create an environment where movement is dangerous and concealment is critical. Once detected, engagement follows quickly. There is very little delay.

This changes how infantry fights.

Movement becomes slower, more deliberate, and more concealed. Units move in small elements. Positions are temporary. Exposure is minimized. Every action is calculated.

There is no safe area.

The idea of a rear area is largely gone. What used to be considered safe zones are now within range of drones, long range fires, and surveillance. Logistics nodes, command posts, assembly areas, and even rest locations can be targeted. This forces units to operate with a constant awareness that they are never truly out of the fight.

Time has also compressed. The window between detection and engagement is extremely short. In previous conflicts, there was often a delay between being observed and being targeted. In Ukraine, that delay has been reduced significantly. Drones identify, confirm, and either strike directly or adjust artillery within minutes. This creates an environment where hesitation or poor movement discipline is immediately punished.

Signature management has become one of the most important aspects of survival. It is not just about what can be seen, but what can be heard, detected electronically, or picked up thermally. Vehicles, radios, movement patterns, and even heat signatures can give away a position. Units must constantly manage how they appear across multiple detection methods.

Positions are no longer designed to be permanent strongpoints. Instead, they are often temporary, concealed, and designed to be abandoned if compromised. Units dig, occupy, fight, and then relocate. Staying in one place too long increases the risk of being targeted. Survivability is tied to movement and unpredictability.

Electronic warfare adds another layer of complexity. Communications can be disrupted or intercepted, forcing units to rely on redundancy, pre planned actions, and disciplined communication practices. Leaders must assume that at some point, communication will degrade and plan accordingly.

The psychological impact of this environment cannot be ignored. Operating under constant observation, knowing that you can be targeted at any time, creates sustained stress. Soldiers must maintain focus and discipline over long periods without relief from that pressure.

At the same time, this environment creates opportunities for those who adapt. Units that understand how to manage their signature, move effectively, and use terrain to their advantage can operate with relative freedom compared to those that do not. The battlefield punishes mistakes, but it rewards discipline and adaptability.

This is the reality of modern war.

Final Thoughts: Infantry Is Not Going Away

Despite all advancements in technology, the infantry remains the decisive force on the battlefield.

What is changing is how it operates.

Smaller units, greater autonomy, integration of drones, and constant adaptation are defining the future of infantry warfare. Ukraine is not just participating in this evolution. It is leading it.

The lessons being learned here will shape the next generation of warfare.

The question is whether others are willing to learn from it.

What Ukraine is showing in real time is that technology does not replace the infantry, it increases the demands placed on it. The soldier is now operating inside a system where information flows faster, threats appear quicker, and decisions must be made immediately. That requires a higher level of training, discipline, and trust at every level.

This also changes how militaries must think about building their forces. It is no longer enough to rely on large formations and centralized control. Forces must be built from the ground up to operate in dispersed, contested environments where small units carry the fight and higher headquarters enable rather than control every action.

Leadership becomes more critical than ever. Leaders at the lowest levels are now making decisions that can have immediate tactical and operational impact. That means selecting, training, and developing leaders differently. Initiative is no longer just encouraged, it is required.

Training must also evolve. Traditional training models that rely on controlled environments and predictable scenarios are not enough. Soldiers must be trained to operate under constant observation, degraded communications, and high levels of uncertainty. They must be comfortable making decisions without perfect information.

There is also a lesson in speed of adaptation. Ukraine has demonstrated an ability to learn, adjust, and implement changes quickly across the force. That kind of adaptability is a competitive advantage. Forces that cannot adapt at that pace will fall behind.

At the same time, the fundamentals remain unchanged. Shoot, move, communicate. Discipline, cohesion, and trust still define effective units. Technology has changed the environment, but it has not changed the core of what makes infantry effective.

What has changed is the cost of getting it wrong.

Ukraine is proving that the future of warfare will not be decided by who has the most advanced systems alone, but by who can integrate those systems with disciplined, adaptive infantry forces.

That is the direction the world is moving.

The question is who is paying attention, and who is preparing for it.

Before the Battle Begins: The Command System That Makes Modern Warfare Possible

War on the modern battlefield is not only fought by soldiers in trenches, armored vehicles, or artillery positions. Behind every movement of troops, every artillery strike, every drone reconnaissance mission, and every resupply convoy is a command system quietly organizing the battlefield. That system lives inside what militaries call the command post.

For someone beginning to study military strategy, understanding how command posts and staff structures work is essential. Battles are not simply chaotic clashes of units. They are coordinated operations that depend on information, logistics, intelligence, communications, and leadership working together at the same time.

In the Ukrainian Armed Forces, battalions and brigades rely on a structured staff system and multiple command posts to manage the battlefield. These systems allow commanders to collect information, understand the situation, plan operations, and direct thousands of soldiers under extremely dangerous and rapidly changing conditions.

This guide explains how that system works in a simple to understand way.

The Battalion: The First Level of Real Command and Control

The battalion is the smallest military unit that maintains a full headquarters capable of planning and executing independent operations. A battalion typically contains several companies and generally consists of roughly four hundred to eight hundred soldiers depending on the type of unit.

At the center of the battalion is the commander, normally a lieutenant colonel. The commander is responsible for making operational decisions, directing the unit in combat, and ensuring that the mission assigned by higher headquarters is accomplished.

However, modern warfare produces enormous amounts of information. One person cannot track the battlefield, manage logistics, analyze intelligence, coordinate communications, and plan operations alone.

To solve this problem, armies organize headquarters into specialized staff sections. These sections support the commander by managing specific functions of the battlefield.

In battalions these are called the S-staff sections, while at brigade level they become G-staff sections, performing the same roles on a larger scale.

The Battalion Staff Sections

Each staff section within the battalion headquarters performs a specific function that helps the commander understand and control the battlefield.

S-1 – Personnel

The S-1 section manages the human side of the unit. This includes tracking personnel strength, managing casualty reporting, maintaining records, processing awards and evaluations, and coordinating replacements for soldiers who have been wounded, killed, or transferred.

In combat operations, knowing exactly how many soldiers are available is critical for planning and executing missions.

S-2 – Intelligence

The S-2 section is responsible for intelligence and battlefield analysis.

This staff collects information from reconnaissance units, drone operators, electronic surveillance systems, and reports from frontline soldiers. They analyze enemy movements, terrain, and patterns of activity in order to build an accurate understanding of the enemy.

In Ukraine’s war, intelligence sections rely heavily on drone reconnaissance and real time battlefield reporting to track enemy positions and anticipate potential threats.

S-3 – Operations and Training

The S-3 section is the operational heart of the battalion staff.

This section plans missions, coordinates operations, tracks the movement of friendly forces, and ensures that combat tasks are executed according to the commander’s intent. The S-3 also manages training schedules and prepares operational orders.

During combat, the S-3 tracks ongoing battles, coordinates artillery support, manages drone reconnaissance tasks, and integrates intelligence information into operational plans.

S-4 – Logistics

The S-4 section manages logistics and sustainment.

Modern warfare consumes enormous amounts of resources, including ammunition, fuel, spare parts, medical supplies, and food. The S-4 ensures that those resources reach the soldiers who need them.

This section coordinates transportation, maintenance operations, equipment repairs, and supply distribution so that the battalion can continue fighting.

S-6 – Communications and Signal

The S-6 section is responsible for communications and information systems.

This includes radio networks, digital communications, satellite links, encryption systems, and data networks used to share battlefield information.

Without reliable communications, command and control collapses. The S-6 ensures that the battalion headquarters remains connected to subordinate companies, higher headquarters, and supporting units.

The Command Post: The Physical Center of Control

The battalion staff operates from a location known as the command post. This is the physical center where information is collected, analyzed, and turned into decisions and orders.

Command posts serve as the physical centers of command and control within Ukrainian military units. They allow commanders and staff to collect information, maintain situational awareness, coordinate operations, and issue orders to subordinate units.

Because modern battlefields are heavily surveilled by drones, artillery, and electronic warfare systems, command posts must be carefully organized and protected.

Instead of concentrating everything in one location, Ukrainian command posts are typically dispersed and organized into several separate elements to ensure survivability and continuity of command.

At both battalion and brigade levels, command posts are normally divided into three major components.

The Main Command Post, the Tactical Command Post, and the Rear Command Post.

Each element performs a different role while remaining connected through secure communications networks.

Main Command Post (Main CP)

The Main Command Post is the primary operational headquarters of the battalion or brigade. It is where the majority of the staff operates and where operational planning and coordination take place.

The Main CP is typically located several kilometers behind the forward line of troops in a concealed and protected location such as wooded terrain, hardened buildings, underground structures, or dispersed vehicle formations.

Because command posts are priority targets for enemy reconnaissance and long range fires, Ukrainian units frequently relocate the Main CP to reduce vulnerability.

Within the Main CP, staff sections operate together in a coordinated environment that allows rapid information exchange.

Intelligence officers analyze incoming reports from reconnaissance units, drone teams, and subordinate units. Operations officers track current combat activity and prepare future missions. Logistics personnel coordinate supply operations and equipment support. Communications specialists maintain radio and digital networks connecting the headquarters to subordinate units and higher command.

The Main CP maintains the unit’s operational picture and supports the commander in planning and decision making.

It also serves as the central hub for coordination with higher headquarters and adjacent units.

Tactical Command Post (TAC CP)

The Tactical Command Post is a smaller, highly mobile command element positioned closer to the forward edge of the battlefield.

Its purpose is to allow the commander and a small staff to remain directly connected to the fight.

The TAC CP normally includes the commander, a small operations cell, communications personnel, and sometimes a forward intelligence representative.

This command element operates from mobile vehicles, armored command vehicles, or temporary field positions that can relocate quickly.

Because it is positioned closer to combat units, the TAC CP provides the commander with immediate awareness of tactical developments. It allows rapid coordination with frontline companies and battalions and supports quick decision making during active engagements.

In many Ukrainian units, the Tactical Command Post plays an especially important role during offensive operations or dynamic defensive battles where commanders must remain closely connected to maneuver elements.

Rear Command Post (Rear CP)

Further behind the lines is the Rear Command Post.

The Rear CP focuses primarily on sustainment, logistics, and administrative support. It is usually located further to the rear of the operational area, often near supply hubs or logistical support bases.

The Rear CP manages supply distribution, transportation, maintenance operations, casualty evacuation coordination, and equipment repair.

Personnel staff also operate from this location to manage replacements, personnel accountability, and administrative functions.

While the Main CP and TAC CP focus on combat operations, the Rear CP ensures that the unit maintains the resources necessary to sustain those operations over time.

This separation allows the operational headquarters to remain focused on the battlefield while logistical operations continue without disruption.

Command Post Survivability and Dispersion

Modern Ukrainian command post operations emphasize dispersion and mobility due to the widespread use of drones, satellite reconnaissance, and long range precision fires by Russian forces.

Command posts rarely operate from a single large location. Instead, elements are dispersed across multiple positions connected by secure communications networks.

Vehicles are often separated by distance, camouflage is used extensively, and positions are frequently relocated.

Command post personnel also employ strict electronic discipline to reduce the risk of detection through signal interception.

This decentralized command post structure ensures that even if one command element is targeted, the unit can continue to operate through the remaining command nodes.

Information Flow Between Command Posts

Information flows continuously between the Main CP, TAC CP, Rear CP, subordinate units, and higher headquarters.

Reports from frontline units, reconnaissance teams, drone operators, and electronic surveillance systems are transmitted to the staff where they are analyzed and incorporated into the operational picture.

The operations staff then updates the commander and coordinates actions with other staff sections.

Orders are issued to subordinate units through radio networks, digital communication systems, and liaison officers.

The Tactical Command Post often provides real time battlefield information to the Main CP, allowing the staff to adjust plans and coordinate supporting assets such as artillery, drones, or reinforcement units.

This constant exchange of information allows commanders to make decisions quickly and adapt to rapidly changing battlefield conditions.

Brigade Command Post Structure

At the brigade level, the same structure exists but on a much larger scale.

A brigade may control several battalions along with artillery units, reconnaissance formations, air defense elements, engineers, and logistics battalions.

Brigade headquarters therefore requires a larger staff and more sophisticated command post system.

Brigade headquarters often operate several command posts simultaneously, including the Main CP, TAC CP, and Rear CP, with additional planning and intelligence cells supporting ongoing operations.

Brigade staffs must coordinate intelligence collection, artillery fires, air defense operations, electronic warfare, logistics support, and maneuver units across a wide operational area.

This requires reliable communications systems and a well structured command post network that allows rapid decision making and synchronization of combat power across the battlefield.

The System Behind Every Battle

The physical organization of command posts within Ukrainian battalions and brigades is designed to ensure effective command and control while maintaining survivability in a highly contested battlefield environment.

By distributing command functions between the Main CP, TAC CP, and Rear CP, Ukrainian units maintain operational flexibility and continuity even under heavy enemy pressure.

This decentralized command post structure allows commanders to remain closely connected to frontline operations while still maintaining the planning and coordination capabilities required to manage complex military operations.

The Final Exercise

The night of April 21, 2022, was supposed to be the culmination of training.

For two weeks my team had been working with the newly rebuilt Ukrainian 36th Marine Brigade. These men were not yet a seasoned combat unit. Some were survivors from the brutal siege of Mariupol. Others were volunteers who had stepped forward in the first weeks of the invasion when their country called. Some had military experience. Many did not. But every one of them had made the same decision.

They were going to fight.

More importantly, they were going to defend their country.

Our job was simple in theory but brutally important in reality: teach them how to survive long enough to do it.

In war, courage alone is not enough. Discipline, movement, awareness, and instinct are what keep soldiers alive when the battlefield becomes chaos.

By the end of the second week we had pushed the platoon through everything we could. Movement under fire. Night patrols. Security drills. React to contact. Camouflage and concealment. Bounding overwatch. Small unit maneuver in wooded terrain.

The fundamentals that keep soldiers alive when everything starts going wrong.

The final test was a twenty four hour field exercise in the forests near the small village of Balovne, about twelve kilometers northwest of Mykolaiv.

Thirty six Marines.

Six instructors.

And a stretch of dense pine forest that offered both concealment and danger. The ground was uneven and covered with years of fallen branches and pine needles. Thick brush tangled the spaces between trees, slowing movement and forcing soldiers to work their way carefully through the terrain.

It was perfect training ground.

Because the battlefield rarely gives you easy terrain.

The After Action Review

Throughout the day the platoon conducted patrols, security drills, and movement exercises across the forest. They established a patrol base, rotated security positions, and practiced responding to simulated enemy contact.

Each event was designed to test something different. Communication. Awareness. Leadership under pressure.

By nightfall the men were exhausted but focused. They had performed well.

We gathered them in the trees for the final after action review.

The Marines sat in a loose circle around me in the darkness. Their faces were barely visible in the faint starlight filtering through the tall pines above us. Some leaned against their packs. Others rested their rifles across their knees while they listened.

The forest around us was quiet except for the occasional movement of wind through the branches.

I spoke quietly as I reviewed their performance and reinforced a few final lessons.

One of the last points I made was simple but critical.

Light discipline.

Even something as small as the glow of a cigarette at night could reveal your position to an enemy watching from a distance.

In modern war, the smallest mistake can get an entire unit killed.

At around 2230 hours, in the middle of that discussion, we heard it.

The Sound in the Dark

A faint mechanical hum drifted through the trees.

At first it was subtle. Almost easy to miss. The kind of sound that blends into the natural background noise of a forest.

But once you have heard that sound enough times in war, you recognize it instantly.

A drone.

I raised my hand in a fist.

The entire platoon fell silent.

Thirty six Marines froze where they sat. No one spoke. No one moved.

The drone was somewhere southeast of us, maybe five hundred meters away. In the darkness it was nearly impossible to see anything above the treeline, but the sound carried clearly through the forest.

I listened as it circled behind us.

The hum drifted slowly across the trees toward our six o’clock.

Then it came back again.

This time it passed directly overhead.

For a moment the sound was directly above us in the dark sky.

And as it crossed over the treetops I saw a brief flash from the underside of the drone.

Just one quick flash.

But that was enough.

We had been marked.

Move Now

There was no time for explanation.

“Leave everything,” I said immediately.

“Helmets. Weapons. Body armor. Move now.”

Training instincts kicked in instantly.

I switched on the red light mounted to my helmet so the Marines could follow me through the darkness without destroying our night vision.

One by one they grabbed their gear and formed a file behind me.

Then we moved.

Fast.

Branches snapped under our boots as we forced our way through the forest. Pine limbs scraped across our uniforms and cut across our faces as we pushed through the dense brush.

The ground was uneven and cluttered with fallen wood. More than once someone stumbled, but nobody stopped.

Speed mattered more than comfort.

We pushed north through the trees for roughly four hundred and fifty meters before stopping.

I spread the Marines out and ordered them to get low.

Some of the Ukrainian Marines began whispering questions. They had not yet fully understood what had just happened.

I shut it down immediately.

“Get the fuck down. Stay quiet.”

Seconds later the night exploded.

The First Strike

Three Russian Smerch rockets screamed into the forest behind us.

The sound was unmistakable. A ripping roar tearing through the sky before impact.

The cluster warheads detonated high above the treetops, scattering thousands of bomblets across the woodland below.

The sky flashed violently as the submunitions exploded across the ground and through the branches above us.

Each bomblet detonated with its own sharp concussion.

The entire forest flickered like lightning as explosions cracked through the darkness in rapid succession.

Fragments tore through branches and slammed into the forest floor.

The pressure waves rolled through the trees.

Had we remained where we were sitting moments earlier, the entire platoon would have been annihilated.

Training had just become real war.

Watching the Sky

I immediately deployed an observation team led by L, a British infantryman and one of the hardest charging soldiers on our team.

L had a natural instinct for reading the battlefield. He was calm under pressure and had a sharp eye for things most people missed.

His team carried the only night vision device we had with us that night.

I positioned him near a break in the tree line about eight hundred meters away. The clearing stretched roughly two hundred meters wide and gave him a clear view of the sky above the forest.

Through night vision you can sometimes see Smerch rockets streaking through the sky before they hit.

A moment later L’s voice came over the radio.

“Top, the drone is coming back around.”

I already knew what that meant.

The enemy was adjusting fire.

Then his voice came again.

“Top, we have three rockets incoming.”

The Rockets Walk Toward Us

We moved again.

Another four hundred meters northwest through the woods.

The Marines were moving quickly now. No one needed an explanation anymore.

Moments later the second volley slammed into the forest about three hundred meters south of where we had just been standing.

The explosions rolled through the trees behind us.

If we had hesitated even one minute longer, we would have been inside that strike zone.

The Marines were quiet now.

They understood.

But the drone was still searching.

“Top,” L said over the radio.

“The drone is circling again.”

If we stayed still, the next volley would bracket us.

And then it would be over.

The Unexpected Move

The enemy expected us to keep moving north.

So I did the opposite.

We turned ninety degrees left.

The platoon broke into a run across an open field nearly four hundred meters wide. It was the most exposed movement we had made all night.

But it was the least predictable.

Three quarters of the way across the field L’s voice came across the radio again.

“Top, three rockets incoming. Right over you.”

I shouted for everyone to reach the trees and get down.

I dove behind the largest tree I could find.

And in that moment, waiting for the impact, I said a quiet prayer.

“Thank you, Jesus. It’s been a good life.”

Seconds later the forest ahead of us erupted.

Cluster munitions shredded the woodland we would have entered if we had continued forward.

Thousands of bomblets detonated across the trees and ground, lighting the sky with violent bursts of fire and fragmentation.

The shockwaves rolled through the forest.

The trees cracked and splintered under the blast.

It was devastation on a scale I had rarely seen.

Then suddenly it stopped.

Silence.

A moment later L came over the radio.

“Top… the drone is pulling away. Sky is clear.”

I exhaled slowly.

"Excellent.” I said over the radio, nothing else.

The Cigarette

I walked through the platoon checking every Marine.

Miraculously, not one man was injured.

The barrage ended around 2250 hours.

The forest slowly returned to darkness.

L rejoined us shortly after.

We all understood what had just happened.

The drone had found us.

And it had guided the rockets to our position.

I rarely smoke.

But that night I walked over to L and asked him for a cigarette.

He looked at me and said quietly,

“Top, you want a cigarette?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Just give it to me.”

My hands were still shaking as he lit it.

We sat there smoking in silence in the darkness.

Neither of us needed to say anything.

We both knew how close we had just come.

Morning

Later I sent squads back to recover their equipment.

Once everything was gathered, we set up small encampments about three hundred meters apart.

Then I gathered the Marines.

“Congratulations,” I told them.

“You passed the final exercise.”

They laughed and cheered.

Eventually exhaustion caught up with everyone.

I lay in my sleeping bag staring into the darkness waiting for another barrage that never came.

My medic, T, stood nearby watching over me the entire night.

At around 0800 hours the next morning someone kicked my sleeping bag.

“Sir… time to get up.”

Sunlight was breaking through the pine trees, I could still smell the cordite and ash.

This 21 year old Ukranian Marine grabbed my hand hand helped me to my feet.

When I stood up I saw fifteen Marines standing around me.

Then he hugged me.

Tears were running down his face.

“Thank you,” he said.

I hugged him back, and before I knew it, I was crying too. We just stood there holding each other for a moment, both of us feeling the weight of everything we had just been through.

One by one the rest of the platoon came forward. Each shook my hand or embraced me.

Many of them had tears in their eyes.

Because they understood something now that only combat teaches.

They had survived their first night under fire.

That night in Balovne changed them.

They walked into those woods as recruits.

They walked out as Marines.

And I walked away knowing something else.

War had spared us that night.

Swarm UAV Warfare is the Future

For most of modern military history, battlefield dominance has come from the concentration of force. Massed artillery, armored formations, airpower, and coordinated maneuver allowed armies to overwhelm an opponent at decisive points. Today, that concept is beginning to change. The next revolution in warfare may not come from larger formations or heavier weapons, but from the opposite direction. It may come from thousands of small, intelligent machines operating together across the battlefield.

Unmanned aerial systems have already transformed modern warfare. What began as reconnaissance platforms evolved into strike systems capable of delivering precision munitions and providing real time battlefield awareness. Now the next phase is emerging. Artificial intelligence driven drone swarms capable of identifying, prioritizing, and attacking targets across an entire battlespace with minimal human direction.

The military that masters this capability first will hold a decisive advantage.

From Individual Drones to Intelligent Swarms

At present, most drones used in combat operate as individual systems. A single drone performs reconnaissance, delivers a munition, or conducts surveillance over a specific area. Even when multiple drones are used at once, they are usually controlled individually by operators who must manage each platform and its task. Swarm warfare changes that model entirely. Instead of controlling one drone at a time, commanders would deploy hundreds of autonomous or semi autonomous drones simultaneously.

These drones would operate under shared algorithms and artificial intelligence systems that allow them to distribute tasks across the swarm automatically. Each drone could be assigned a specific sector of the battlefield and operate within defined restrictions such as restricted operating zones, friendly force protection boundaries, no strike areas, and prioritized target categories.

Once launched, the swarm distributes itself across the battlespace and begins searching for targets according to its programmed priorities. This transforms drones from simple individual tools into a distributed combat system capable of operating across a wide operational area at once.

Target Prioritization Across the Battlefield

One of the key advantages of AI swarm warfare is the ability to categorize targets and prioritize them automatically. Instead of relying entirely on human operators to identify targets in real time, the swarm can search for specific battlefield signatures and engage them in a logical order.

The targeting hierarchy might begin with the most critical battlefield systems. Air defense units would be the first priority because neutralizing radar systems and missile batteries opens the airspace and allows follow on operations to proceed with less resistance. After air defense systems, the swarm would begin targeting armored formations.

Tanks and heavy combat vehicles represent the most concentrated mobile firepower on the battlefield, and a swarm capable of locating and overwhelming armored units quickly could dramatically shift the outcome of ground engagements. After armored forces, the swarm would shift its focus toward mechanized infantry vehicles and troop carriers, which transport the infantry forces responsible for controlling terrain and conducting maneuver operations.

Once maneuver forces begin to degrade, communications systems become critical targets. Radios, relay vehicles, satellite communication nodes, and digital command networks allow an army to coordinate operations across multiple units. Disrupting those systems fractures battlefield cohesion and limits an enemy’s ability to maneuver or respond effectively.

After larger systems are neutralized, the swarm can begin identifying smaller formations such as individual infantry groups. Artificial intelligence systems can detect movement patterns, thermal signatures, and behavioral indicators that reveal the presence of soldiers in concealed positions. Finally, command posts and operational coordination centers become priority targets. Destroying command centers paralyzes an opponent’s ability to direct forces and maintain control of the battlefield.

This layered targeting process allows a swarm to systematically dismantle an entire combat formation piece by piece.

A Distributed Firepower Revolution

Historically, mass firepower has been concentrated at the battalion or brigade level.

Artillery battalions, attack aviation units, and armored formations provided the ability to deliver overwhelming combat power at decisive points on the battlefield. Artificial intelligence driven drone swarms distribute that same level of firepower across hundreds of independent platforms.

A single battalion sized swarm could control hundreds of autonomous drones, each equipped with sensors, targeting systems, and munitions. Instead of relying on centralized fires controlled by higher headquarters, commanders could deploy a distributed network of lethal systems across the entire battlespace. In effect, swarm warfare gives smaller tactical units the destructive capability that once required entire brigades of combat power.

This dramatically increases the tempo of warfare and allows commanders to apply pressure simultaneously across multiple points on the battlefield.

Historical Lessons in Military Innovation

History repeatedly demonstrates that technological revolutions change warfare when they are properly integrated into doctrine and strategy. The introduction of machine guns during the First World War dramatically increased defensive firepower and reshaped battlefield tactics. Armies that failed to adapt to this technology suffered catastrophic losses during frontal assaults.

During the Second World War, Germany demonstrated how tanks, aircraft, and radio communications could be integrated into a fast moving operational system known as Blitzkrieg. This combination of mobility, firepower, and communication overwhelmed slower adversaries and changed the nature of mechanized warfare. During the Gulf War in 1991, precision guided weapons introduced a new level of accuracy and coordination between sensors and shooters, allowing military forces to destroy key targets rapidly and with unprecedented precision.

More recently, drones have already altered modern combat in conflicts across the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In Ukraine, small drones are used daily for reconnaissance, artillery correction, and precision strikes against armored vehicles and infantry positions. The next step in this evolution is the integration of artificial intelligence into drone systems.

The difference between individual drones and intelligent swarms may be as significant as the transition from cavalry warfare to mechanized armored warfare in the twentieth century.

Technological Advantages of AI Driven Swarms

Artificial intelligence provides several key advantages that make swarm warfare possible. One of the most important is distributed autonomy, which allows each drone to operate independently while still cooperating with the swarm’s overall mission objectives. This allows the swarm to adapt dynamically to battlefield conditions.

Artificial intelligence also enables rapid target recognition. Machine learning systems can be trained to identify vehicles, weapon systems, equipment signatures, and human movement patterns far faster than human operators alone. Another advantage is resilience. Destroying a small number of drones does not stop the swarm because hundreds of other platforms remain operational and continue the mission. Swarms also offer scalability, meaning they can be deployed in small numbers for tactical missions or in massive formations covering entire operational sectors.

Finally, swarm systems allow commanders to saturate defensive systems. Even advanced air defense networks can struggle to intercept hundreds of incoming targets simultaneously, creating new pressure on traditional defense structures.

The Strategic Impact on Future Battlefields

If fully realized, AI swarm warfare will fundamentally change how battles are fought at every level. Concentrated formations will become far more vulnerable because tanks, artillery batteries, and command posts can be detected and attacked rapidly by autonomous systems. Battlefield transparency will increase dramatically because drone swarms can maintain persistent surveillance across wide areas, making concealment increasingly difficult for conventional forces.

Command structures may also become more fragile because targeted attacks against communications and command nodes can disrupt coordination across entire units. Perhaps most importantly, the speed of warfare will increase significantly. Autonomous systems operate faster than human decision cycles, forcing militaries to adapt to a much higher operational tempo.

The battlefield will increasingly become a contest of algorithms and artificial intelligence systems as much as a contest between soldiers and traditional weapons.

The Strategic Race Now Underway

Several nations are already investing heavily in swarm technologies and artificial intelligence integration. The United States, China, Russia, and multiple NATO allied countries are exploring autonomous drone swarms capable of coordinated operations.

Research programs are focused on cooperative targeting systems, decentralized command structures, and machine learning assisted battlefield management. The question is not whether this technology will emerge. The real question is how quickly it will mature and which nation will deploy it first.

If a potential adversary achieves operational swarm capability before Western militaries fully integrate similar systems, the consequences could be significant. Traditional formations may find themselves facing overwhelming distributed firepower from hundreds of autonomous attackers operating across the battlespace.

Implications for NATO, Western Armies, and Ukraine

For NATO and Western forces, the challenge is twofold. First, they must develop and deploy swarm technologies of their own. Waiting for adversaries to perfect these systems first would create a dangerous capability gap.

Second, they must develop effective countermeasures capable of defending against swarm attacks. These may include advanced electronic warfare systems, directed energy weapons, improved air defense technologies, and specialized anti swarm tactics and doctrine.

For Ukraine, the lessons are immediate. Ukraine has already demonstrated remarkable innovation in drone warfare. Ukrainian engineers, soldiers, and volunteers have developed new systems and tactics faster than many traditional military institutions. Integrating artificial intelligence into drone operations could provide Ukraine with a powerful asymmetric advantage against a larger adversary.

However, this development is part of a global race. The army that learns to deploy intelligent swarms effectively will reshape the battlefield.

Conclusion

Throughout history, warfare has been defined by technological revolutions. The longbow, gunpowder weapons, armored vehicles, aircraft, and precision guided munitions all transformed how wars were fought.

Ukrainian Marine and TCAG instructors on Zero Day, marking the start of intensive combat training.

Since the first days of the full scale invasion, a small group of foreign combat veterans has been quietly working inside Ukraine.

No press conferences.
No slogans.
No promises they cannot keep.

They came for one reason only: to stand beside Ukrainian soldiers and help them survive the most brutal war Europe has seen in generations.

They are the Tactical Combat Advisory Group (TCAG).

TCAG is a volunteer organization made up of experienced combat advisors, instructors, and military professionals from multiple countries. Many have spent their lives in uniform. All came to Ukraine knowing exactly what was at stake.

They are not here for politics, publicity, or profit.

They are here because when a nation fights for its survival, experience matters.

“We Train Men Who Could Be Gone Tomorrow”

Bradley “Top” Crawford addresses a Marine company ahead of live training drills, setting standards and expectations.

“Every day, we train men who could be gone tomorrow,” says Bradley “Top” Crawford, Commander of TCAG. “That weight never leaves you. It is the reason we never waste time, never cut corners, and never pretend.”

Crawford is a retired U.S. Army veteran, founding member of a Security Force Assistance Brigade, and a combat veteran with five overseas deployments. He served as an infantryman in both light and mechanized Bradley formations before moving into advanced roles as a Master UAV (Raven) Operator and Senior Intelligence Analyst.

He worked on battalion level intelligence and operations staffs responsible for more than 800 soldiers.

Over the course of his military career, Crawford completed advanced military education including the U.S. Army Foreign Weapons Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Close Access Target Reconnaissance (CATR) training, Battle staff, and multiple U.S. Army Instructor Schools. He advised partner forces across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

But Ukraine is different.

“This isn’t a rotation. This isn’t a deployment with an end date,” Crawford says. “This is a country fighting for its right to exist. And we are here with them.”

Training Where the War Is Actually Fought

TCAG and Ukrainian instructors train a sniper unit from the 95th Airborne Brigade, focusing on precision and battlefield integration.

Since the start of the war, TCAG has trained over 5,500 Ukrainian soldiers across 22 brigades and three major training centers.

Their work spans Mykolaiv, Kherson, Kyiv, Odesa, Kramatorsk, Chasiv Yar, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Zhytomyr.

Unlike many international training programs conducted safely abroad, TCAG operates entirely inside Ukraine.

They train under the same skies Ukrainian soldiers will fight under. They hear the same air raid sirens. They adapt to the same drone threats, electronic warfare, and artillery realities.

“When we meet a unit, the commander tells us what they need,” Crawford explains. “We receive formal combat orders, just like anyone else. Then we execute.”

TCAG’s training is practical and uncompromising.

Trench warfare.
Urban combat.
Ambush tactics.
Live-fire coordination.
Tactical medicine.
Drone operations.
Command presence and leadership.

Beyond the squad and platoon level, TCAG also advises battalion and brigade staffs on planning, coordination, and leadership under pressure.

There are no classroom only solutions here.

“No theory survives first contact,” Crawford says. “Everything we teach has been paid for in blood somewhere. That matters.”

Building Ukraine’s Future Instructors

TCAG trains members of the new instructor program led by the General Staff J7 of Ukraine. These soldiers represent the next generation of Ukrainian military instructors and leaders, responsible for carrying forward the lessons learned on the battlefield and passing them on to future units.

TCAG’s work does not end with individual units.

The organization has also worked alongside the Ukrainian General Staff J7 and the National Defense University of Ukraine, helping develop standardized training doctrine and instructor development programs.

Their goal is long term sustainability.

“We don’t want Ukraine dependent on us,” Crawford says. “We want Ukrainian instructors leading Ukrainian soldiers long after we’re gone.”

By focusing on instructor development and staff level training, TCAG helps ensure that lessons learned on the battlefield are captured, standardized, and passed forward.

Knowledge earned in combat must never be lost.

Every training cycle conducted.

All of it is supported by people who understand that Ukraine’s fight is not theoretical.

It is real.

A Frontline View of Modern Warfare from Ukraine

I have spent the last three and a half years in Ukraine as a combat instructor and advisor. I am not writing this from theory, a desk, or a war college presentation. I am writing from what I have seen repeatedly on the ground, across multiple brigades, in multiple sectors, under real pressure.

Modern war has fundamentally changed.

Ukraine is not simply fighting a war. It is becoming the laboratory where the future of high-intensity conflict is being shaped in real time. The transformation is not academic. It is not gradual. It is constant, violent, and unforgiving.

There are no clean front lines. There are no predictable maneuver corridors. There is only pressure, surveillance, and adaptation. Any analysis rooted in Cold War assumptions misses the battlefield entirely.

The Battlefield Is Permanently Transparent

One of the first realities you learn here is that concealment is temporary and visibility is constant.

Persistent ISR from drones means movement is observed, patterns are tracked, and positions are cataloged. Units that remain static become targets. Units that maneuver without coordination become casualties.

Terrain control is no longer measured solely in kilometers. It is measured in time under observation. A trench line may change hands without either side ever fully owning it. Positions are entered, fought over violently, and abandoned before artillery or FPV strikes respond.

Rear areas are no longer safe zones. Logistics hubs, assembly areas, and training sites are routinely targeted by long range drones and missiles. The concept of a secure depth has eroded.

There are no sanctuaries anymore.

Infantry Remains Decisive, But It Has Evolved

Despite technology, infantry remains the center of gravity. However, how infantry fights has transformed.

Large, tightly grouped formations are vulnerable. Drone reconnaissance punishes mass. Artillery punishes delay. Electronic warfare punishes predictability.

Small, dispersed, flexible units survive.

Ukrainian infantry operates in fire teams and squads that move deliberately, using terrain masking, thermal concealment, and strict timing. They rely on integration with drone operators and artillery observers rather than brute force.

Infantry now clears trenches, secures observation points, protects drone teams, screens artillery units, and enables armored support. Nothing holds without infantry presence. That has not changed.

What has changed is that infantry must operate under constant aerial observation, constant electronic interference, and constant threat of precision strike.

The difference between units that understand this environment and those that do not is measured in survival rates.

Armor Has Adapted or It Dies

Tanks and armored vehicles are still present daily on the battlefield. What disappeared was the illusion that unsupported armored thrusts can survive modern ISR and precision strike networks.

Armor is no longer the spearhead. It is protected, mobile firepower.

Tanks operate from covered firing positions. They relocate frequently. They support infantry advances and destroy hardened positions. Many function similarly to self propelled guns, providing indirect or protected direct fire rather than breakthrough shock.

Armor that remains stationary becomes a drone target.

Armor integrated with infantry, electronic warfare, camouflage discipline, and rapid relocation survives longer.

This shift is not weakness. It is adaptation to a battlefield where exposure equals destruction.

Artillery Remains the Primary Casualty Producer

Despite the rise of drones, artillery remains the dominant killer on the battlefield.

The difference now is integration.

Drones close the loop between detection and destruction.

Reconnaissance platforms identify targets. Fire missions are adjusted in near real time. Impacts are confirmed instantly. Damage assessments are conducted immediately.

Response time has compressed dramatically. The traditional lag between spotting and striking has narrowed to minutes in effective units.

Precision now outweighs volume. Units firing large volumes without mobility or concealment are counter batteried quickly. Survivability depends on speed, camouflage, and rapid displacement.

Drones Define Tempo and Survival

Drones are no longer supplementary systems. They define the operational environment.

The side that controls the air at low altitude controls the battlefield.

Reconnaissance drones provide persistent surveillance. FPV systems conduct precision strikes against personnel, vehicles, and fortified positions. Loitering munitions target high value assets, including command posts and air defense.

Drone operators are integrated into maneuver planning. Infantry protects drone teams. Electronic warfare units attempt to suppress opposing drone coverage.

This is a continuous contest of adaptation. Drone technology evolves. Countermeasures evolve. Frequencies shift. Tactics shift. What works this month may fail next month.

Surprise is limited. Exposure is punished immediately.

Communications Are the Nervous System

Modern combat formations function through networked communication.

Secure radios, encrypted digital systems, and satellite connectivity allow real time coordination between drones, artillery, maneuver units, and command elements.

When communications collapse, cohesion collapses.

Electronic warfare attempts to jam and degrade connectivity. Physical strikes target command nodes. Units cut off from communication become isolated and vulnerable.

I have seen operations succeed purely because communications held under pressure. I have seen others unravel because they did not.

Command and control is no longer just leadership. It is infrastructure.

Air Defense Is About Damage Mitigation

Air defense in this war is layered and constant.

Short range systems protect frontline units from drones. Medium range systems defend logistics hubs and staging areas. Long range systems protect cities and national infrastructure.

No air defense network stops everything.

The goal is mitigation, not perfection.

Every interception saves infrastructure, equipment, or lives. Every failure exposes vulnerabilities that must be corrected quickly.

Air defense has become a daily operational necessity, not an occasional strategic consideration.

Adaptation Is the True Weapon

The most decisive factor in this war is not a specific system or platform.

It is adaptability.

Doctrine changes rapidly. Tactics evolve constantly.

Lessons from the front are pushed back into training cycles quickly. Units that incorporate battlefield feedback protect their personnel more effectively. Units that cling to rigid doctrine suffer.

Integration is everything. Infantry, armor, drones, artillery, communications, and air defense are interdependent. No single element operates in isolation.

Leadership at the small unit level is critical. Initiative matters. Flexibility saves lives. Ego costs lives.

Ukraine is not only fighting for survival.

It is redefining how modern high intensity warfare is conducted under persistent surveillance, electronic disruption, and precision strike.

Anyone studying modern conflict should be paying attention.

Because this is not theoretical.

This is the battlefield of today.

Operation Spiderweb and the Lesson the West Cannot Ignore

Operation Spiderweb Was a Structural Warning

Operation Spiderweb should have shaken every Western military establishment. Not because it unveiled a revolutionary weapon or relied on classified technology, but because it exposed how modern warfare is actually being fought and scaled under real combat pressure.

Ukraine did not depend on limited production, high cost, exquisite systems. It relied on distributed planning, layered deception, rapid iteration, and large numbers of inexpensive unmanned systems integrated into a functioning operational ecosystem. The significance was never the drone itself. The significance was the system behind the drone.

Modern war now rewards scale, speed, and structural integration more than technological perfection.

Ukraine Built an Operational Ecosystem, Not a Gadget

To understand Operation Spiderweb, you have to understand what Ukraine has built since 2022.

By 2023, the Ukrainian battlefield had become permanently transparent. Persistent ISR from quadcopters, fixed wing drones, thermal systems, and satellite feeds meant positions rarely remained hidden for long. Units that lingered were detected. Units that massed were targeted. Logistics nodes that repeated patterns were struck.

The sky became terrain.

Ukraine did not retreat from this environment. It adapted to it. Drone teams were embedded at lower and lower echelons. Infantry squads began maneuvering based on aerial observation windows. Artillery units integrated live drone feeds into near real time correction loops. Electronic warfare became constant background friction.

This was not gradual reform. It was forced evolution under lethal pressure. Operation Spiderweb emerged from four years of adaptation where frontline lessons fed directly back into training cycles and manufacturing decisions within weeks.

The Real Innovation Was Organizational

Units must disperse, maneuver, and exploit opportunities faster than an adversary can react. When decisions must move up a long chain of command before action can be taken, valuable time is lost.

When every decision must travel up and down the chain of command, tempo slows and opportunities are lost. Modern combat instead rewards units that can adapt rapidly, adjust their tactics on the fly, and maintain momentum under pressure.

This is where empowered NCOs become critical.

Sergeants and Corporals are the leaders closest to the fight. They understand the situation on the ground in real time, and they are in the best position to make immediate adjustments that protect their soldiers and accomplish the mission. When NCOs are trusted with authority and guided by clear command intent, they become the engine of adaptation on the battlefield.

Modern warfare does not reward hesitation. It rewards disciplined initiative.

And that initiative must live within the squad and platoon if an army is going to keep pace with the speed of modern combat.

Unlocking Ukraine’s Advantage

Ukraine is already one of the most combat-experienced armies in Europe. Formalizing and empowering its NCO corps would accelerate that advantage dramatically. It would increase small unit lethality, reduce officer burnout, improve training consistency, and enhance survivability without additional manpower or equipment.

This war has demonstrated that adaptability wins, delegation wins, and trust wins.

Ukraine does not need to copy NATO wholesale. It needs to unlock its own NCO corps.

In early 2022, Ukraine faced a conventional maneuver threat reminiscent of mid to late 20th century warfare. Russian forces attempted deep armored thrusts toward Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Kherson. The battlefield looked, at first glance, like something closer to 1991 than 2025.

But that phase did not last.

The failure of rapid armored breakthroughs forced both sides into attritional fighting. By summer 2022, trench systems expanded dramatically. The war began to resemble elements of World War I in its positional brutality, but layered with 21st century ISR and precision fires.

Initiative at the small unit level is essential.

Ukraine’s training model has moved from traditional infantry-focused doctrine to an integrated system built around drones, precision fires, dispersion, survivability, electronic warfare resilience, and rapid adaptation.

This transformation is not theoretical. It is not academic. It is forged under fire.

Historically, wars accelerate innovation. The American Civil War changed artillery and logistics. World War I reshaped maneuver and firepower. World War II defined combined arms. The Gulf War demonstrated precision dominance.

Ukraine is defining the era of persistent surveillance and unmanned integration.

And it continues to change.

Reporting increasingly indicates that Russia has exhausted its reserve of T-80 main battle tanks.These were not outdated museum pieces or symbolic holdovers. The T-80U variants represented mid-grade, combat-reliable armor. For a long time, they were among the best tanks Russia could field in meaningful numbers. What appears to remain in storage are largely cannibalized hulls that do not look realistically restorable.

As of February 24, Russia has lost roughly 11,700 tanks in this war. At this stage, it appears they have lost most, if not all, of their mid-grade, combat-ready main battle tanks. Even the so-called flagship T-90s are now reportedly down to near double-digit numbers.

What the hell?

That leaves older platforms, rushed refurbishments, and improvised fixes rolling toward the front. This includes legacy designs pulled from deep storage and pushed back into service with minimal upgrades. That is not a modernization plan. That is attrition finally catching up with reality.

You do not burn through decades of armored stockpiles like this and recover quickly, no matter what propaganda claims. Industrial capacity, trained crews, optics, engines, and logistics all matter. Once they are gone, they cannot be conjured back overnight.

Keep paying attention. This war is grinding Russia down in ways that cannot be hidden, spun, or reversed on command.
